What we do | About this site | Hot Topics | Complex Issues | Practical Solutions

We map healthcare commissioning and service provision needs to the healthcare estate. We specialise in gathering and co-ordinating healthcare  infrastructure and resources information sets, and managing these in a relational database. We have developed unique ways of integrating graphical information (such as drawings) with non-graphical information (such as in spreadsheets and documents).

Using the powerful features of our software solution, coupled with health sector expertise, we are able to provide a comprehensive range of data management services and solutions, including scenario and strategy planning. Our main aims are to inform and provide decision support to:

  • Commissioners of Health Care who have responsibilities for assessing and meeting the health needs of the local populations, whilst optimising the current and future infrastructure needs within stringent affordability, accessibility and quality criteria
  • Providers of Health (and Community / Social) Care Services who wish to know more about the estate and facilities aspects linked to their contractual relationships with Commissioners
  • Estate Management professionals within PCTs, LIFT Companies and associated supplier organisations

This site is sponsored and supported by market leading data management specialists. We have detailed working knowledge and extensive practical experience of estate management, including within the NHS. (see About us at the foot of this page).

This site contains a summary of key issues currently facing the management of the health care estate and infrastructure, including meeting the challenges posed by the Transforming Community Services (TCS) programme. We have tried to provide some insight into these issues and how they could be tackled.

Intentionally we have not sought to replicate or reproduce original procedural guidance or governmental / departmental publications (although links to these are provided where this is considered helpful); However, we do seek to place them into an operational and practical context.

We’ve taken the following topics and distilled them into a short summary of key points – primarily in the context of the health care estate. Links are provided to relevant (originator) sites / documents where appropriate.

We also believe PCTs commonly face a problem with having discrete sets of information on premises and care services, which are not joined up. We have found that whilst there are typically good levels of intelligence about each of these aspects, it’s almost impossible to view one in relation to the other in a way that is easy to interpret and understand. At HEDM we believe this is a potential barrier to successful CIAMS implementation.

Some typical issues faced by PCTs in respect to the health care infrastructure and estate, include:

  • Alignment with Commissioning and Service provision
  • Optimising investment priorities across maintenance and development
  • Minimising operating costs and waste
  • Disposal of redundant / surplus assets

Aligning the estate and infrastructure provision to, and optimising with, the Commissioning needs is a fundamental objective. It’s not merely a case of providing a well maintained and cost efficient estate; if it isn’t responding to, and meeting the needs of the local health economy (i.e. the ‘wrong’ types of facilities in the ‘wrong’ locations) the Commissioners and Service Providers will be unable to deliver or sustain the essential models and quality of care.

Help is at hand. Within Healthcare Estate Data Management (HEDM) we have a broad range of sector expertise and well proven data and information management solutions to assist you with meeting the requirements of the CIAMS process. We have tailored a service to fully support the programme needs, as a CISDM Partner.

We can either provide our services to PCTs through established strategic alliances or supply frameworks, such as LIFT companies or Procure21 PSCPs, or directly to Commissioners and Providers. Our data management solutions use the market leading ‘ActivePlan’ software, which has an established track record of successful application within the Health Sector.
ActivePlan is an integrated suite of powerful databases capable of combining and modelling graphical and non-graphical data in a single spatial and relational environment. Using ActivePlan we are able to take existing (discrete) sets of estate and service provision information and bring them together to be viewed as ‘intelligent floor plans’ or maps.
